About this work: “ Restoration explores the point where expressive mark-making begins to gather into a loose, shifting form. I wanted to see how colour can create structure without becoming fixed or rigid—allowing shape to emerge rather than be defined. The painting reminds me of an explosion of blossom: abundant, energetic and constantly on the verge of dispersing. This echoes my interest in the unstable nature of time and memory than runs through all my work.”

About: Paper Tree is part of my Deep Among the Grasses series (2025). While making this work, I was thinking about the experience of being fully immersed in a landscape, where the air and ground feel thick with life. Paper Tree maintains a lightness, with pastel and jewel-coloured brush marks floating over a milky-white surface. Each brush mark is intended to appear caught in motion — we are looking at particles in constant motion that make a form, scattered marks that coalesce.

“ Liz Foster’s painting hums with playful dissonance. Loose blocks of colour; turquoise, ochre, blush, and crimson, jostle for space, layered with scribbled forms that hover between gesture and symbol. The brushwork feels unguarded, almost improvisational, but the composition holds its ground through rhythm and contrast. There’s a balance between childlike spontaneity and studied abstraction, where line cuts through field, and accidental marks become intentional. Foster’s work invites viewers to linger in uncertainty, finding coherence inside its layered chaos ”
